What is Iberá?
Several are the answers to this question. It is our country´s most adequate place to observe the savage fauna, it is also a reason to be proud of, for the inhabitants of Corrientes, and ecologically speaking it is a magnificent set with unique characteristics of interconnected lagoons, swamps, pastures, woods, forests and rivers.

This Natural Reserve covers 13.000 Km2 of the northern and central area the Corrientes. Iberá partly owes its biological richness to its location between the two graet rivers: Paraná and Uruguay. The System is configured by different natural regions which offer species that are natives to the marchlands associated to the Paraná, to the dry region of the Chaco and the forests bordering the rivers Paraná, Uruguay, Paraguay e Iguazú. It originated 8.000 years ago when the Paraná suffered a graet water loss diminishing its volume by a 75% leaving a waterless fan – shaped delta between the SW of the Paraguay and our Iberá. A fine equilibrium maintains the system´s very special condition basically nurturing on rainwater (between 1.200 a 1.500 mm yearly): 75% evaporates or is used up by the plant and 25 % drifts away to the Paraná via the Corrientes River.

Some animals also fulfil most unexpected functions. The Caiman for example, is the one in charge of adding – on materials which are scarce in the aquatic media and abundant on the terrestrial one: it manages to capture animals on earth and defecate in the water. Another star of the Iberá is the marsh deer, which traverses the ridges of fertile land between lakes and  rivers in search of the few plants it can feels on. We cannot help mentioning the capybara, that easy-going fatty that spends most of its tiem eating leaves, sunbathing and going for a swim. As for the birds shows them off in all shapes and colors, a paradise for the layman to observe.
Low impact tourism is perhaps the only possibility of conserving this marshland and its inhabitants. We invite you to discover it.
